AMITE, Louisiana — The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) Major Crash team is investigating a tragic collision between an Amtrak train and a pickup truck that occurred on March 25, 2026, just south of Amite, Louisiana, resulting in the death of 22-year-old Dorian Batiste. The incident took place shortly before 2:30 p.m. when the southbound Amtrak train struck the front end of the truck, which was crossing the railroad tracks on Ponders Quarters Lane. Batiste, a passenger in the truck, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital. At the time of the collision, the train was carrying 149 passengers, with one treated for a panic attack. Emergency responders quickly secured the scene, provided medical attention, and ensured the safety of the passengers. The TPSO Major Crash team is investigating the cause of the collision, with preliminary findings suggesting a possible malfunction with the truck’s brakes. Authorities are assessing the truck’s mechanical condition and reviewing the driver’s actions. The railroad crossing does not have active warning lights or crossing arms, though signs are posted on both approaches, including instructions to yield when approaching from the east and to stop when approaching from the west. The TPSO is reminding motorists of critical railroad safety practices, including stopping at least 15 feet from the tracks, obeying active crossings, exercising extra caution at passive crossings, and always wearing a seatbelt. “This is a heartbreaking incident, and our thoughts remain with the family of Dorian Batiste,” said officials, urging drivers to take railroad safety seriously and to wear seatbelts to reduce the risk of injury or death. The investigation is ongoing, and additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
