Marshall County, Indiana – The community is reeling after the sudden death of Michael Vebert, 46, of Fort Wayne, who lost his life in a severe traffic collision on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. The crash occurred on State Road 8 near the intersection with State Road 17. Investigators report that Michael’s 2008 Mercury Sable, traveling eastbound, failed to yield, colliding with a southbound 2018 Freightliner semi-tractor-trailer. The force of the impact was fatal, and Michael was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two passengers were in the vehicle with him: an adult in the front seat and a juvenile in the back. Both survived but sustained injuries and were transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment. The semi-truck driver, 61-year-old Mitchell Sailor of Elkhart, was unharmed and declined medical attention.
Emergency responders from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Plymouth Fire and EMS, Culver EMS, and the county coroner’s office acted swiftly, managing the aftermath of a crash that had already claimed a life.
